It's Bout time again!!!

The WIRD girls went off to Sydney last weekend to play the Sydney Roller Girls at the Hordern Paviliion. What an amazing venue for derby, the lights, the action!! The theme this time was The Roller Derby Horror Show. The girls looked great in their outfits and make up. They put so much effort into their outfits and costumes, it makes the whole event a whole lot more interesting. Good on you girls. Here is a short slideshow for your viewing pleasure. Thanks again girls for allowing me into your world :)

I decided to focus on Demander 24/7.  I will attach a link to give you some more information about the program and to let you know what it's all about. I have learnt so much this weekend. I've learnt new techniques in photography, I've learnt more about Roller Derby rules (there are so many) and I have learnt about the Derby love. The love and support the girls give one another is phenomenal! It's so endearing and sometimes it makes me want to cry!! Well let's not go too far :)

I'd like to thank the WIRD girls for being so enthusiastic about my project and allowing me into their lives. I'd also like to thank the organises of The Great Southern Slam for organising such an amazing event. Thanks guys :)

Photo Shoot!!

So I'm getting ready for a photo shoot with the girls. I'm slowly trying to wrap up this project but I'm finding it hard to know when to do it! So many events popping up and of course the Great Southern Slam is coming up. Here are the details;

"For two whole days, over June 12-13, 2010, roller derby teams will converge on Adelaide from every corner of Australia and New Zealand to do battle with skate and booty. Some will come intent on glory, others to test their mettle, but all will come to revel in the biggest celebration of hard hitting knocks and derby love this nation has ever seen"
www.greatsouthernslam.com.au

So as you can see, it's going to be huge!!!

So I'm going to try and get to the slam, anyone want to go on a road trip??
Decide when I'm doing this exhibition and also decide if I should compile a book or not. To help try and get me there I have added advertising to my site. I have tried to make it as Roller Derby friendly as possible.
I need all the help I can get to make this project happen!!

If you are interested in meeting some of the girls and seeing what I do, you are welcome to come and hang out during the photo shoot.

The Final Bout...

So I am still recovering from last nights bout. What a game!! Unfortunately the WIRD girls were beaten by the Dockyard Dames, but once again it was very close. Congratulations on being such good sports. There was also a moving tribute to Two Ton Teyla who passed away last week. It's beautiful to see how much love and respect the girls have for one another. She will be missed.
Once again I'll be posting a few shots. I am organising an exhibition and book launch. Just finalising dates at the moment. So stay tuned...

So next match is next Saturday night at the Horden Pavillion.

Road Trip!!

So I was excited to head up to Newcastle to see the Steel City Derby Dolls take on the Dockyard Dames on their home turf. It was officially my first game and I was overwhelmed by the support and enthusiasm of the Newcastle crowd. I was almost deafened many times by there screams. It was hard to concentrate on the actual game as I started clicking away like mad. I positioned myself at the end of the ring, this is what they call suicide seating. I now know why they call it that. I was lucky to escape a couple of times. This made it even more exciting!
So around 400 photos later!! The game was over and the Steel City Dolls narrowly lost against the Dockyard Dames. The final round was tense and the girls gave it there hardest. Good on you girls, I am seriously NOT worthy!! You guys are amazing!!
I'd like to thank Jasmin for coming along and inspiring me and assisting me and also putting up with me screaming at the traffic and navigator man.

So everybody, I hope you have tickets for the next bout in Wollongong. I wouldn't miss it for the world :)

my first taste...

Alas, my roller derby project has begun. I went to my first training session with the girls. Let me tell you those girls are fit! It was interesting to see that they dress up for training too. They must have to get used to playing in fishnets. So here are a couple of pics to give you a taste.
Don't forget the girls are having a bout in newcastle next week. Steel city versus steel city. For more information go to http://www.wird.com.au/

Baby steps...

I've finally decided to join the rest of the world and start a blog. I've been inspired by my friend Margie's blog, thanks honey x check it out myveryowneyegoggles.blogspot.com
So I am a photographer, sculptor, artist etc etc. Lover of life and good food and vibrant, pure, fun people. I am working on a few projects this year and since I haven't got my act together with my website I thought I better start documenting something.
My next project is documenting the lives of the Wollongong Illawarra Roller Derby chicks. I recently saw the movie Whip It! and I absolutley loved it!! I also started to hear about the girls through various friends. So I decided to focus on these brave, strong sexy women. So in the next few months I'll be updating photos stories and anything else coming my way.
I also plan on doing a Handbag Project. I have been talking about it for too long now. So I'm looking for woman to pose for me with there trusty handbags and then reveal the contents of them. I know this can be a personal challenge for some but I find it fascinating to see what women carry around with them. Don't you? I was also thinking about weighing the bags. Let's wait and see what happens.
So that's all for now. Hello world!!
